What Is The Best Mexican Food in Austin?
What is the best Mexican food in Austin? This is a question I frequently get asked. They say “Everything is bigger in Texas!” This includes my quest to discover the best Mexican food in Austin. With only one day left in Texas before our cross country move to Florida, we made a point to sample the delectable fare available at Z’Tejas.
THE Z’STORY
“The Z’Tejas Southwestern Grill story begins in Austin, Texas where the first location was born in an old Victorian house on historic 6th Street. The love for this authentic southwestern Mexican restaurant quickly grew and their next location opened in Scottsdale, Arizona. Currently, there are eight Z’Tejas restaurants. Five in Arizona and three in Austin—including the original location on 6th Street. Z’Tejas is known for a rich blend of flavors that people have enjoyed for more than two decades.
Owned by Cornbread Ventures, LP, the restaurateurs have more than 25 years’ experience in the industry. They have established a reputation of owning restaurants known for fresh ingredients and scratch kitchens. With an assembled team of incredible culinary and hospitality experts with a sole focus on providing a dining experience that will exceed their customers’ expectations.
Z’Tejas is great place to host your birthdays, celebrate your anniversaries and—for many—it is their kitchen away from home.”

Z’Tejas offers Cornbread for a Cause, as an appetizer. For only $3 you can delight your tastebuds with a warm cast iron baked southern favorite. Proceeds from each skillet is donated to a LOCAL charity! Each month a new charity is selected. During the month of December, Dell Children’s Medical Center (Gunner’s treatment hospital) received a donation of over $23,000 raise from Cornbread for a Cause. Absolutely amazing way to give back to local residents of the community!
Z’Tejas’ Cornbread for a Cause is savory in all the right ways. Featuring whole pieces of whole sweet corn inside a crunchy crust. This traditional favorite reminded me of Sunday dinners at my grandma’s! I paired my cornbread with a light and refreshing strawberry mojito fearing fresh sprigs of mint!

I highly recommend you sample Z’Tejas top requested appetizer featuring grilled shrimp and guac tostado bites! My kids were fighting over the last one! Absolutely delicious shrimp with cilantro pesto nestled on house-made tostada rounds, with a dullop of guacamole, chipotle, served with a spicy cucumber salad. Talk about a bite size powerful burst of flavors in your mouth!
Z’Tejas boasts a southern twist on the traditional mac n’ cheese. Five cheese macaroni & achiote chicken features jack, cheddar, parmesan, romano & bleu cheese with a bacon gratin. My son, Gunner loved this “grown up” cheesy pasta plate of perfection!
Z’Tejas’ baja fish tacos are perfectly fried with crispy batter, flaky fish topped with Southwestern slaw and mango salsa served on corn tortillas with seasonal rice and black beans.
We also enjoyed the Chef’s special! Coca-Cola braised pulled pork tacos topped with southwestern slaw, pickled red onions and a BBQ aioli! Z’Tejas is one of the few restaurants I can honestly say I enjoyed ever single dish I tasted!
