Day three of our cross country road trip started off with a bang. My husband sprung out of bed. Hungry and ready to eat breakfast immediately. His definition of breakfast is a full hot meal. If it doesn’t include sausage or bacon, then its not breakfast. I on the other hand prefer to wake up have coffee and then eat breakfast after my shower around 10am-ish. In our fury to get packed to leave the hotel for breakfast. We discovered my son had lost his shoes. We checked the room, the pool area, and all of the bags. Yep! They are gone. I’m not sure how he does it. But, this is a regular occurrence when we leave the house. I just have to laugh and be thankful. At least they were a cheap pair of fip flops. Right? I will chalk it up as the first casualty of our road trip.
I planned for an easy day of driving ahead. Houston, Texas to Destin, Florida is 575 miles. We should have have been able to make the drive in just under nine hours. However, it actually took over 12 hours. Ten miles from our hotel, the Hilton SanDestin. We stopped for dinner at The Back Porch. I read some great Yelp reviews about the restaurant. Great food with a beautiful view of the ocean. The food didn’t disappoint at all. I ordered crab stuffed shrimp. My husband had lobster stuffed mahi-mahi. And the kids had shrimp poppers! We all ventured out of our comfort zone! Our family ate oysters for the first time. When your that close to the ocean. You know your eating fresh and local! They were alot better than I expected. I’m not sure I’m ready to eat raw oyster anytime soon. But we are making progress! The kids really loved the cheese sauce the oysters were baked in. Our view from our table of the Gulf of Mexico was stunning! The atmosphere was so relaxing!
We arrived at our hotel, The Hilton Sandestin around 9PM. The resort is within 200 ft our walking distance to the beach! The view from our suite overlooking the hotel pool, deck and ocean was impeccable.
The kids loved the bunk beds and their own tv to watch their shows! I was thankful for our own tv! I appreciated the separation from the living area/our bed. After several days together, its nice to give the kids space apart.
We dropped off our bags and set off to explore the resort. There are several on site restaurants including Hadashi Sushi Bar and Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood. Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa also offers 2 outdoor pools, 4 championship golf courses, 14 tennis courts, bicycle rentals, and an assortment of water sports activities at Baytowne Marina! Unfortunately, everything was closed because we arrived so late! We plan to return to the resort soon for a few days to be able to enjoy all of the amenities offered. Hilton SanDestin truly a vacation destination that requires more than an overnight visit!
We took the walkway to the beach for a barefoot walk in the moonlight. Destin, Florida has miles of white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. As we were walking back to the hotel, my husband who aspires to become the next Steve Irwin, “The Crocodile Hunter”! He managed to capture a beautiful white crab. It was so dark it made it very difficult to photograph the crab, the kids were super excited to see one up close. I on the other hand was happy I didn’ step on one!
We returned to our room at the Hilton SanDestin to get some rest. The next morning we woke up to the most beautiful view of the ocean. I was so sad to leave this beautiful pool and beach in Destin, Florida. We will be coming back to visit Destin soon!
We grabbed a cup of Starbuck’s coffee on-site from The Coffee Shop, departed from the hotel early that next morning! Our next stop, Universal Studios in Orlando!
Have you ever visited Destin,Florida? Are you more willing to swim in the ocean or a pool?
