So I received this shocking message on Gunner’s Facebook Page this morning as I sat down to enjoy my morning cup of Starbucks:
” Please please listen to me. Its the chemo that’s killing him. Take my advice, see above xxx”
My initial response was to lash out. It felt as if all the air had left my lungs, a kick in the stomach. We are 10 months into this journey. As if childhood cancer diagnosis for my eight year old son wasn’t enough. I’m baffled at the judgements we’ve received throughout Gunner’s treatment process. I refuse to stoop to their level. Instead I choose to spread awareness……
The brutal honest facts are:
WITHOUT chemo my son wouldn’t be here with us today.
At diagnosis, leukemia cells had crowded out space in his bone marrow leaving no room for red blood cells. Those red blood cells are what supports organ function. The average person has 11-13 units of hemoglobin (blood) in their body. Gunner had 5 units….not nearly enough to for him to survive.
Chemo began immediately. Imagine filling your child’s body with chemicals that knock them out cold just so they can tolerate more chemicals that will cause their skin to turn ashen, cause dark circles around their eyes, make their hair fall out, mucositis, change their tastebuds so they don’t even want to eat anymore, and if they do eat… the food comes right back up. These are some of the visible effects. Not to mention, heart damage, liver damage, pancreatitis, onset of a secondary childhood cancer caused by chemo to treat the original diagnosis.
Imagine looking into your child’s eyes after they look up from coloring pictures and say “Momma, I never thought I would get cancer.”
It’s easy to sit behind a computer and judge others, when you haven’t walked a mile in their shoes.
Until you hear the words, “Your child has CANCER.” you can’t fathom the gravity of the situation.
There is NO time to research alternative natural or holistic methods to fight childhood cancer, get second opinions, or resist treatment. The clock is ticking and your child’s life is at risk. I would like to also mention that cancer treatments for children are regulated by the government. WE as parents don’t have a CHOICE. Resist the treatment deemed necessary by their doctor and your children will be removed by CPS (Child Protective Service)
From the moment of diagnosis…. this is our reality. The stakes are HIGH. Our family wants off this emotional roller coaster. For the next three years, Gunner will take chemo daily to retrain his bone marrow to only produce healthy red blood cells and NOT leukemia cells. This is our only option to keep Gunner’s leukemia in remission. With this chemo regimen, Gunner has a 94% cure rate to defeat this beast called childhood cancer. We will handle the side effects as they arise. In the meantime, we are thankful for the advances in medicine & the chemo that saved his life. We cherish each day we have with our son.
